Southland Sends 10 Competitors to NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship

Steels will compete against Alexander and 14 other competitors in the long jump after a second-place finish in the conference meet. The jump placed the junior second in the NSU record book and makes her the first Lady Demon to appear at the NCAA Indoor Championships since Stephanie Sowell in the 2004 season.Campbell will look to continue her impressive postseason run after being named the Southland Conference’s Freshman of the Year and Most Outstanding Field Events Performer. The freshman qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championship in her first career meet for the Ladyjacks, when she vaulted a 14-4.75 at the Ted Nelson Invitational in College Station, Texas.Ruiz and Ellis will also make their way from the SFA campus to compete for the men’s pole vault championship. Ruiz is no stranger to appearing at the national level as he finished 12th overall in the pole vault at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Championship as a freshman. The Lumberjack sophomore earned his invite after an 18-1.75 jump at the Don Kirby Invitational Feb. 8-9 in Albuquerque, N.M. Ellis, a freshman, is coming off a Southland Conference pole vault championship, and a First Team All-Conference nod, after clearing 18-0.5 at the conference meet. His first-place finish at the Southland Championship punched his ticket to the national meet.Sam Houston State’s McCall and Jefferson will serve as the Southland’s lone runners at the NCAA Championship. McCall will take on the field in the 60-meter hurdles. He earned a conference championship at the Southland Indoor event, breaking a meet record with a 7.75 clip. Fellow Bearkat Jefferson will contend for the NCAA 200m crown after a 20.97 silver-medal outing at the conference championship meet. The final Sam Houston State contestant will be Clayton Fritsch, who will enter the pole vault field. Fritsch placed third overall at the conference meet and qualified for nationals with a leap of 18-2.0 at the Howie Ryan Invitational Feb. 9 in Houston, Texas.Southeastern Louisiana’s King will represent the Lions in the pole vault after his silver medal performance at the Southland meet. The SLU senior is a three-time NCAA All-American and earned his way back to the national stage with a personal-best 18-5.5 at the Tyson Invitational Feb. 9 in Fayetteville, Ark. King enters the weekend as the No. 16 ranked vaulter in the nation.Women’s events will begin with the pentathlon opening up Friday at 12:15 p.m. CT. McNeese’s Grace McKenzie, Northwestern State’s Jasmyn Steels, Incarnate Word’s Sarea Alexander and Stephen F. Austin’s Nastassja Campbell will make the trip for the women’s championships. Meanwhile, the men’s competitors will be comprised of six student-athletes. Sam Houston State will be represented by Clayton Fritsch, Fabian McCall and Chris Jefferson. Antonio Ruiz and Branson Ellis will appear for the SFA men’s program. Southeastern Louisiana’s Devin King will serve as the final competitor from the Southland. Events will be hosted at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala.McKenzie enters the weekend after setting a new Southland Conference record this season at the Samford Multis, scoring 4,211 points. After competing at the 2019 Southland Conference Indoor Championship as an individual, the senior logged 23 of the Cowgirls’ 72 points, including a silver medal in the high jump. McKenzie will enter the NCAA Indoor Championship among the pentathlon field and currently ranks eighth in the nation in the event.Alexander will look to contend for the long jump title after concluding a successful appearance at the conference meet. At the Southland Championship, the UIW senior completed a gold medal performance in the long jump and set a UIW program record leap of 20-11.2 along the way.
